An unresponsive iPhone screen is one of the most annoying problems an iPhone user can face!

I’ve been using iPhones for the longest time and have had very few problems with them. However, one of the most annoying problems that I’ve encountered – and one of the most common among iPhone users – is the iPhone screen not responding to touch.

This problem basically renders the device useless; you can’t make calls, use apps, or do anything else.

Fortunately, there are a few simple solutions that you can try before taking your phone to the Apple store or chucking it in the trash.

Check Your Apps

Apps on iPhone

The first thing you do is determine the cause of your iPhone not responding to touch. If you notice that it only stops working when you’re using certain apps, then the apps may be the problem. Delete the potential problem apps and see if your touch screen can work fine.

Do a Hard Reset

Hard Reset iPhone

If the cause of your Iphone touch screen not working properly is not in the apps, then it’s possible that it’s a software issue. To solve it, you can do a hard reset so that you can refresh the software settings.

To do a hard reset, hold the Power button and Home button at the same time until you see the Apple logo. If you’re using an iPhone 7 or higher, hold the volume and power button. It should be fine after doing this.

Restore Default Settings

If the hard reset doesn’t work, then it’s probably an issue with the software settings. In this case, you might need to do a default setting restoration. To do this, simply connect your iPhone to your computer and boot iTunes or iCloud and backup all your data.

Then go to Settings, then General, then Reset. Once you restore the default settings, you can plug your iPhone back to your iTunes or iCloud and bring back all the erased data. Your touch screen should be working fine by now.

Downgrade Your iOS

One of my friends who owned an iPhone 6s complained that her touch screen couldn’t work after she updated the iOS of her phone from iOS 10 to iOS 11. With that, she downgraded her iOS 11 to the previous iOS 10 and it worked!

Sometimes your version of the iOS isn’t compatible with some of the phone’s settings, causing problems. So if your phone doesn’t work well with the new iOS version, just downgrade it.

To downgrade, search for an ipsw file of your previous iOS version and download it to your computer. I recommend going to www.ipsw.me.

After that, turn off the Find my iPhone setting by going to Settings, then iCloud.

This is another effective alternative to simply just restoring the default settings.

Take Out the Screen Protector

iPhone Screen Protector

If you’ve done all of the above-mentioned software fixes but to no avail, then the solution may be as simple as taking out the screen protector. Sometimes, the screen protector is the one that minimizes the screen’s touch sensitivity.

Try taking out the screen protector and see if your phone works. If it’s the screen protector, then I recommend you buy a thinner one or buy one of those new liquid screen protectors.

Another reason would be because the screen is dirty. So after you take out the screen protector, use the Apple screen cleaner to wipe the screen. The Apple screen cleaner is a spray cleaner that effectively wipes away the dust or debris of a screen. Using this method can possibly help solve the problem.

Press the Cables Connecting the Logic Board

Sometimes, the problem isn’t in the software but in the hardware. For instance, your iPhone screen could be unresponsive after a drop. In this case, dropping the iPhone could loosen up some parts that could affect the touch sensitivity.

iPhone Logic Board

To fix this, open up the back of your iPhone and look for the logic board. Connected to the logic board are a bunch of cables that enable the screen’s touch feature. All you have to do is press on those cables and the logic board just a little bit.

Note that you may have to press the cables a few times before you can get your phone to work. Try once and see if it did the trick. If not, try a few more times, checking every time you do.

This trick is one of those last resort tricks that you’d want to do if nothing else works. I’ve done it before with great success to fix my iPhone 6.

Turn It On and Throw It in Rice

iPhone in Rice

No, this is not a superstition. This is a method that you can when an iPhone screen is unresponsive after a drop in a pool of water. The most important thing to do in this situation is to get your phone’s interior dry.

So first you have to open your phone to heat it up so it dries itself from the inside. After that, throw it in a sack of raw rice for a few hours. The raw rice absorbs the water from the inside and helps the phone dry faster. This way, the digitizer that drives the functions of the touchscreen won’t be so affected.

Replace the Screen Manually

Replace iPhone Screen

A possible issue could be the screen, especially if your iPhone has a cracked screen. You can buy yourself a kit and just replace the screen yourself. If the iPhone touch screen not working after screen replacement, then it is possible that the screen isn’t compatible with the phone. In that case, you can try getting a new screen. This is why I usually recommend that you buy two new screens just in case one doesn’t work.
